I love Magpies, I think they are one of our most beautiful and charasmatic birds. I don't believe in any of that superstitious twoddle and think they get a lot of bad press (undeservedly)!
Yes, they may take chicks but that's nature, they have their own young to feed too - it's not as though they're like cats (don't get me started on them!).
I think they are quite comical birds when you watch them hop around, they're kind of like the "geezers" of the bird world!

Their irredescent feathers are gorgeous especially when the sunlight catches them just right. I had 5 in my garden today, all chasing each other round & "playing", until a Rook came down and told them where to go!

Thanks Warren, I'm just tired of hearing how Magpies are "unlucky", especially here in Ireland. Can you believe Magpie trapping still goes on in some parts of this country? I just don't understand why!
I too have no time for superstitious clap-trap Sharon, I have a relative who is entrenched in it!
I think Magpies have the most beautiful coloured feathers when seen in the right light. Last year they visited a lot in fact I think they were nesting in the garden but this year I have only heard them.

This is a bird that I really want to get a good photo of, but the ones I see seem to skittish, I've not got near one as yet! Something to aim for. Nice that you get them in your garden, and rook, are you quite rural location Sharon?
I live on the outskirts of a small village in County Wicklow, Ireland, probably about 10 minute drive from the nearest town. It helps that our garden backs onto a wooded area so we get a variety of woodland birds feeding (or we did, has quietened down at the moment though!) We tend to hear the Magpies before we see them!

I want to support your love of magpies! We get them here in the Northern Rockies too, but many people consider them pests. I adore them. They are such characters and so handsome with that absurdly long tail.
