Dilemma

At the risk of repeating myself, I need advice on what to do!

I know I've mentioned this before but I'm still not sure... we're hoping to move house in the next couple of weeks and the plan was to gradually decrease the amount of food I put out for the birds.

I've now completely run out of peanuts, there's only half a feeder of sunflower seeds and just 1 fatball left in the ring.

The problem is I wasn't expecting it to be this bloody cold every day and I'm finding it hard every morning not to refill all the feeders! Especially when there are 2 Long Tailed Tits huddled around the remaining fat ball - its quite a pathetic sight!

Some mornings its like a scene from Snow White in our back garden.. the pair of Robins sat watching you (glaring would be the correct term!), Chaffinches and Blackbirds throwing things around on the ground looking for something to eat and then there are the 2 Squirrels literally sat on the back doorstep waiting for you to throw nuts out!

So, what do I do? Do I give in and replenish all feeders to give them a chance or carry on and hope it warms up soon? If its the latter then I would have to leave all blinds closed as I don't think I could stand to see them all starving & shivering outside!

Please help!

They will forgive you and they will come to the same house.

Hard as it may seem, stick to your plan. As Bob says they will come back eventually.

If its still cold, put some food out Sharon. Very soon now, alot of birds will find enough natural food in the countyside, and wont rely on your handouts so much.

Yeh I agree with what has been said already!! Stick to your plan, they will some places to survive if they need and they will eventually come back to the same house later on...

Okay, thanks guys - I might still put out a tiny bit of food tho just while it's still in the minus figure during the night (only a tiny bit mind!)

I still think it might be a good idea to leave a bag of seed, a feeder and a note for the new tenants asking them to carry on feeding, they might find they enjoy it and carry on the good work!

Hey Sharon, deffo put food out for them in this cold weather! They need it. In a few weeks when you move, the weather should be warmer and they can survive on their own. I wouldn't worry about them in the future when you leave - they will be quite fine - but for now I'd be putting the food out!
Where you moving to?

I too would continue to put out food and I think that Shy Songbirds idea is a great one. They new people might be interested already or you might be converting new people to the joys of watching wildlife in the garden!
