Pocket Rockets!

Why does it always seem there's about 50 Coal Tits in the garden, when there is in fact just 3?
They're like miniature rockets zipping everywhere!

Can't complain though, they're about the only regular visitor we have at the moment (of the feathered kind- Cyril & Peanut are still feeding every night!)
I tried a different tactic and put out a new seed feeder and half coconut in the hope of attracting the birds back.......but not one thing has landed on the seed feeder so far!
The Coal Tit is loving the coconut though and the Robin keeps trying to have a go on it. He seems to think he's a Humming Bird and just hovers in front of it whilst jabbing his beak in (he's the one exit stage left in the photo below!)

I'm trying the old "Peanut butter on the tree trunk" trick to see what can be tempted...........

I'm sure you will get more visitors before long Sharon, there is still a lot of hedgerow fruit around for them and of course there is always the possibility you may have a Sparrowhawk around or even a dreaded cat which could be putting them off!

Coal Tits certainly are busy little birds, that is a very good name for them :)

I've not seen any Sparrowhawks around here but there are certainly at least 2 cats in the area. We do try to scare them off though with jugs of water!
I suppose the warm(ish) weather over the last couple of weeks has meant a spurt in food for the birds. I can't wait for it to get cold!

Hi Sharon. I'm sure the birds will all turn up once they can't access their natural food sources & need to top up their fat reserves.
I see you have a hummingbird Robin as well..I'm still trying to get a decent pic of its antics. FAB.

...I've never put out a coconut for the birds (I've never seen it done). I recently cut one in half and cleaned it out so I can turn it into a bird feeder to hold peanuts and sunflower seeds. I'll have to try halving one and hanging it out this winter with the coconut meat still in it. I bet the birds do like that!

Hi Kelly - sorry I don't think I made it very clear, you can buy the coconut shell over here already packed with suet, dried insects and seeds in it - it's not actual "coconut" inside. Even though....it might be worth trying your idea to see what likes it!

Kelly - if you do try the coconut thing, let me know how you get on and I might try to get a whole one over here!
